Applications of Deep Learning: Deep Dreaming
Is it possible for a machine to dream? Yes!
Deep dreaming is when a machine generates hallucinated images. Often, a trained AI model will be able to classify images. However, the opposite could happen, where it is asked to modify an image to yield a better confidence score in the classification. When this process is repeated, it leads the machine to “hallucinate” and generate psychedelic-like images.
For example, the machine could be asked to generate a more bird-like image to classify it with more confidence. If that image goes through the same process again and the next ones do the same, such hallucinations are created. You can compare this to when you try to recognize shapes in the clouds. Google’s DeepDream software allows you to generate deep-dreaming images.
